Setting up DNS in DigitalOcean dashboard

Last Updated: May 06, 2016 07:21PM CEST
This article covers the process of setting up the DNS records required for HTML5 apps and Agencies through DigitalOcean dashboard (if you use it for managing your domain names). We'll cover this setup in a few simple steps. If you have any problem setting this up after reading this article, please contact our support department via email: shoutem@shoutem.com .

DigitalOcean DNS redirection setup

First of all, login to your DigitalOcean Dashboard. Once you're logged in, go to Networking section. After that, click on Domains in the left menu.

This is your domain name administrative dashboard, from where you can modify all of your domain records. You should see a list of Domain name records.

Tap on magnifier icon right to the domain name that you want to use to with HTML5 app or Agency, and you'll see a list of DNS records for chosen domain name.

In order to set-up DNS records properly, you will need to add few DNS records.
- for HTML5 app, you will need to add only 1 record.
- for Agency account, you will need to add 4 records.

Setting up HTML5 app subdomain

If you want to set-up domain name for HTML5 application, you will need to add CNAME record with following parameters.

Record Type: CNAME
Name: This is where you need to enter your subdomain. In the example below, we used "m", which would make the complete URL look like this m.yourcustomdomain.com. Another popular subdomain is "app" (app.yourcustomdomain.com).
Hostname: "apps.shoutem.com." note: do not remove the trailing dot, otherwise you won't be able to add this record

And click on blue "Create CNAME Record" button to the right to save your new record.

Once your record has been saved, it will appear on list, and should look like on image below:

Congratulations, you've just successfully set up the redirection to your mobile app. Keep in mind this may take up to 48 hours to be fully activated and don't forget to add the newly added redirection subdomain to your HTML5 publish info.

Setting up Agency DNS settings

Setting up DNS records for Agency accounts is somewhat different when using DigitalOcean to manage your domains  (in respect to some other domain name providers such as Namecheap). Because of limitations, we will need to use A redirection instead of CNAME redirection in first step.

1. Setting up redirection for your White-label dashboard

In order to allow your clients to visit your white-label Agency dashboard, you will need to set-up A domain name redirection with following parameters.

Record type: A
Name: This is where you need to enter your subdomain. In the example below, we used "dashboard", which would make the complete agency dashboard URL look like this dashboard.yourcustomdomain.com.
IP Address: "174.36.116.144 "

And click on blue "Create A Record" button to the right to save your new record.

Once your record has been saved, it will appear on list, and should look like on image below:

2. Setting up redirection for your White-label application preview URL

As you know, application users can preview their apps by loading preview URL using  mobile  browser.
In order to hide Shoutem branding and domain name from this link, we'll need to create another Domain name redirection with following parameters:

Record type: CNAME
Name: This is where you need to enter your application preview subdomain. In the example below, we used "*.preview", which would make the complete preview URL look like this <app_id>.preview.yourcustomdomain.com.

Important note: Don't remove "*." before your preview subdomain, it is mandatory, and removing it would cause preview domain not to work!

Hostname: "apps.shoutem.com."  note: do not remove the trailing dot, otherwise you won't be able to add this record

And click on blue "Create CNAME Record" button to the right to save your new record.

Once your record has been saved, it will appear on list, and should look like on image below:

3. Setting up DKIM

As Shoutem sends transactional emails on behalf of our Agencies, Agency owners will also need to add additional TXT records to enable DKIM.

You can do it by following similar steps as in step 2:

Record type: TXT
Name: mandrill._domainkey.YourAgencySubdomain. In the example above (step 1) , we used "dashboard", which would make the complete Name look like this "mandrill._domainkey.dashboard"

Text: v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQCrLHiExVd55zd/IQ/J/mRwSRMAocV/hMB3jXwaHH36d9NaVynQFYV8NaWi69c1veUtRzGt7yAioXqLj7Z4TeEUoOLgrKsn8YnckGs9i3B3tVFB+Ch/4mPhXWiNfNdynHWBcPcbJ8kjEQ2U8y78dHZj1YeRXXVvWob2OaKynO8/lQIDAQAB;

And click on blue "Create TXT Record" button to the right to save your new record.

Once your record has been saved, it will appear on list, and should look like on image below:

4. Setting up SPF

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is a simple email validation system, and we're using it to verify that e-mails sent by our system do not go to recipients Spam folder.

Process is very similar to Step 3.

Type: TXT
Name: YourAgencySubdomain. In the step 1, we used "dashboard", which would make the complete Name look like this "dashboard"
Text: "v=spf1 include:spf.mandrillapp.com?all "

And click on blue "Create CNAME Record" button to the right to save your new record.

Once your record has been saved, it will appear on list, and should look like on image below:

Congratulations, you've just successfully set up the redirection to your agency dashboard. Keep in mind this may take up to 48 hours to be fully activated and don't forget to add the newly added redirection subdomains to your agency account settings. You can check how to add subdomains to your agency account settings here.
